How sweet it is to have SweetBio, Inc. buzzing around our city! 🍯 The brother/sister duo at the helm of this innovative medical device company, Dr. Isaac Rodriguez & Kayla Rodriguez Graff, took the science behind manuka honey and paired it with the venture capital world to create a truly unique solution to wound care. But they aren't done yet! They continue to challenge themselves to lean into their specialized skill sets to disrupt the status quo and give back to their community. Their efforts gained national attention when SweetBio and VC firm VamosVentures received funding through Apple’s Racial Equity and Justice Initiative.

The result? Tennessee Shakespeare Company was born. From there, the intentionality to diverse, educational productions followed suit. Then, came his "radical, non-political solution to literacy." Katie Smythe fell in love with dancing at an early age, but she quickly realized that turning that love into a hobby (or even a career) requires access and opportunity. Dr. David Schwartz (Professor & Chair, Dept. of Radiation Oncology, UTHSC School of Medicine) has made a career of learning and healing. He was at the forefront of COVID prevention in the Memphis area, so much so that he was named as one of Memphis Business Journal's Healthcare Heroes. But even with all he's already learned, he's on a quest to continually climb and get out of his comfort zone.

Austin Crowder is making his curriculum come alive for his Soulsville students by asking “Can Government Class Revolutionize Police Encounters?” And he’s taking it a step further by making his findings free, open to the nation, and scalable for every situation.

A brief “Know Your Rights” curriculum being added to Government and Civics classes throughout the country could dramatically mitigate the risks faced by civilians and police throughout interactions, increase police accountability, decrease incarceration rates, and save lives. Austin Crowder discusses the unit’s learning process and invites them to experience what makes it effective and explore the remarkable survey data demonstrating its impact. He paints a picture of how, if scaled, the unit could fundamentally shift the narrative around police encounters, benefit both civilian and officer, mitigate dangerous escalation, increase self-efficacy of civilians, and lower incarceration rates. Austin currently teaches government and economics at The Soulsville Charter School in South Memphis. Throughout eight years as an educator he has developed a Know Your Rights Unit for implementation in civics classes throughout the city and country.
